What Not to Miss at EDUCAUSE

by Vanessa Young
We’re heading to the Windy City next week for the 2019 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference, and couldn’t be more excited to be surrounded by some of the brightest IT professionals in higher education. Navigator (now Avaap) will be onsite, booth #530, talking to higher ed professionals about modernizing their technology to streamline processes, improve decision-making with BI, and lower IT management costs.
With more than 600 informative sessions packed into only a few days, it can be hard to plan your EDUCAUSE schedule, but we did the legwork for you. Here are some of the top EDUCAUSE events we are looking forward to next week and sessions that should be on your show agenda.

Harnessing the Power of Podcasting
Tuesday, October 15 | 10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. | W185a, Level 1
Podcasts are becoming increasingly popular. Maybe you listen to one while you work out, or to make your traffic-filled evening commute less enraging. Did you ever think it could have a place in the education industry? Professors Critchfield and Pottinger from Grand Canyon University will lead a hands-on session showing how podcasts can build your education network.
Speakers: Meredith Critchfield, Professor, Grand Canyon University & Emily Pottinger, Faculty Chair/Assistant Professor, Grand Canyon University
The Universal Learner Record: More than a Life Transcript
Wednesday, October 16 | 10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. | W185D, Level 1
This moderated discussion will look at the universal learner record, representing what a student has achieved and what a student may be able to achieve, and how this can be translated into a life-long learner record. Participants will also discuss what types of student experiences are worth permanently capturing.
Speaker: Lev Gonick, CIO, Arizona State University
Privacy Matters: An Ethical and Regulatory Approach
Thursday, October 17 | 9:30 a.m. - 10:15a.m. | W196C, Level 1
You have most likely heard about big data and privacy concerns in the media, but what about using your students’ big data (geo-location, social media, and learner profile) to further your institution’s mission?
Join this moderated discussion to consider the ethical implications of leveraging this data, the risks of it, and how The Ohio State University is incorporating an ethical framework into its data privacy program.
Speaker: Holly Drake, Learning Analytics Consultant, The Ohio State University
Start-Up Alley
We are excited to check out the 46 emerging EdTech companies as they showcase how they are addressing key issues in higher education, such as access, student success, retention, and cost, all using technology.
The Closing Keynote
Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, will be closing out the conference with a general session called Closing the Gender Gap in Technology. Her session will advocate for a new model of women in leadership that focuses on embracing risk and failure, promotes mentorship, and more.
Navigator (now Avaap) is committed to closing the gender gap in technology and leadership. Our Women in Leadership (WIL) network is an opportunity for all members of our organization to come together and discuss topics ranging from sexual harassment in the workplace to pay disparity. Not only do we invest in our own women leaders, but the group has recently piloted a youth program for students to learn about business, technology, and leadership, showing them that these fields are open for everyone.
